The Year 2018 and what it means to CJM
By Dr. Juice, January 6th, 2018

The year 2018 is here and with it marks the 20th year anniversary of Canadian Juice Monsters! This is huge. This is monstrous. This is EPIC. Believe it or not members it's been twenty years since the very first post was published way back in 1998. If you've taken the time to read the history of CJM and it's humble beginnings than you'll have an idea of just how far we've come. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever envision this lengthy of a duration when I embarked on creating the site. The funny thing is I still remember it like it was yesterday. Let me elaborate . . .

Turn the clock back twenty years and I was a young strapping twenty-six year old. Times and finances were tough just like any twenty-something of today. I lived in a downtrodden part of the city along with two other roommates. We'd rented the top floor of a large character home which was owned by one of the roommate's mom. At that time we all worked separate lousy jobs to pay the rent and have a little leftover for whatever else, typically partying. I was juggling two jobs, one being a restaurant chef in the day and then working as a bouncer at night. I hated it. Well, I can't say "hate" because the restaurant job did provide me with all the free food I could wish for. And it couldn't have been that bad because I stayed working there for twelve years in total. But the pay was meagre and being the typical twenty-something spendthrift, I couldn't afford a car at the time so found myself having to either bicycle or walk my ass to and from the restaurant and nightclub. That's what I hated. The restaurant job was 8:00am to 4:00pm and the club was 10:30 to 2:00am and beyond. It was a gruelling schedule but thank god the two jobs only clashed on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I remember well getting home at four-in-the morning, setting my alarm, and then getting a little quick shuteye before having to get back up at 7:30am and rush to work. More than once I fell asleep in the staff washroom.

Weightlifting had always been a passion of mine and I really took hold of the lifestyle at seventeen years old. I lived and breathed every aspect of the gym culture for many years. At twenty-six years old however this passion had become secondary to the simple fact of life and having to survive. The gym was no longer the number one priority. Long gone were the days of carefree living at home without a care in the world besides going to the gym daily and consuming free groceries on a whim. I still managed to go to the gym but it was on a more sporadic basis.

It was during this time I longed for reigniting my lost passion and interacting once again with gym-folk. That's the moment when two worlds collided. Back in 1998 computers were big and clunky with dial up connections that were painfully slow. I'd owned a Commodore 64 in the 80's but those were primitive compared to the stolen IBM computer I managed to get my hands on in '98. Still big and clunky by today's standards that stolen IBM computer was cutting edge back then. Excitedly I assembled the thing on a desk in my rented bedroom and then had the cable company come and complete the hookup. I was connected!

After the initial business of surfing porn was out of the way my attention turned to bodybuilding culture or more importantly; steroids. As I've mentioned previously in CJM's history, this was a whole new world. Gone were the days of creeping around the gym and having uncomfortable conversations in gym locker rooms. Here it all was and it spanned the globe. It was like a drug I couldn't get enough of. I'd run back and forth, before and after work, so I'd have as much time as possible between jobs to research and interact online.

Before long I'd become quite astute to the nuances of this online culture and longed for something with Canadian content. Until then it was primarily crude American or British forums I was browsing and gleaning information from. The idea took hold and It was then I set about creating something uniquely Canadian.

Fast forward twenty years and here we are in 2018! There's been stumbles with bruised and cut knees along the way, but no matter, CJM has persevered and still thrives today. Hundreds, if not thousands of members have come and gone in that time. Sadly some have even passed away. But every day the new blood of the culture shows up at CJM's doors and demands entry. From time to time we're even pleasantly surprised by returning members that have been absent for very long periods and decide to look the old site up. I personally love this aspect of the forum. It gives me shivers of delight when an old and recognizable name returns and updates us on their life and what they've endured. CJM really is a remarkable thing.

Which leads us to the future . . . and the next twenty years. Good lord, I'll be well into my sixties! Being that this marks CJM's twentieth year of existence there needs to be celebration. There needs to be updating. There needs to be change. I've put a lot of thought into this and have many ideas. I might have only a couple marbles left rolling around in my head but I've managed to come up with a few positive ones. Throughout the unfolding year of 2018 I'll be implementing these ideas and let the membership know along the way of these changes. During this time I also invite each and every member to make suggestions or share ideas of what they'd like to see in the community. After all, CJM is all of ours to call home. Please do not hesitate to post your suggestions or critique.

So hold onto your hats CJM, things are changing after today and all throughout the unfolding year. Some change will be miniscule and some will be dramatic. Hold hands and join me now . . . okay that's kinda gay (no offense). I'll try Again. Come together Monsters and join me as we embark on the twenty year celebration of Canadian Juice Monsters and ring in the glorious year of 2018 -- 'The Year of the Monster'!!

    Sincerely,
    ~Dr. Juice~

    — Haha all the dumps . . . Club Cal (became Buckley’s on Broad) , Monty’s, Dougy Pub, Al Capone’s (formerly Pier 42) , Wasteland (formerly Decadance, New York New York), Boom Boom Room (formerly Merlin’s) and The Westwind in Langford. I retired in 2001 after 12 years. I definitely don’t miss it. The whole game has changed. Your called a door person/host now and need training and be licensed by the Province. You don’t even need to look like you work out anymore. Back in the day bouncers were basically paid by the pound. The bigger and brutish you were the more you earned.

congrats and thanks to you and all the admins and mods who have kept this going. it may never be truly recognized because of its underground nature but this board is part of canadian internet history. and this underground nature makes it a legit piece of internet culture. i was deep into bbs and then the internet before netscape. from my experience, there were three main groups that gravitated to this technology. 1. weightlifters, bodybuilders, bodybuilders. 2. people who loved but didnt want to pay for underground music. 3. illicit drug manufactures. does anybody remember email groups? probably the first form of social media. i was on one with scientists, professional trainers and such like Stone and dr squat. then forums came around. this is really the only social media i use. i really believe forums are under used and have the potential to transform organizations a even our democracy.
im really blown away how long its been.

I remember back in 2002 when I first showed up on the board, man I was just a newbie back then. PS and I had just started training together. Had the pleasure of meeting DrJ and we came good friends right from the start. Man we are getting old, lol...

    UPDATE
    January 9th, 2018

    1. Renamed the competition forums to the original name of 'Competitors Corner'.

    2. Condensed all the individual Provincial forums into sub forums of the CBBF to save space and clean it up.

    3. Reinstated Sorbate's PM function.
