I'd use it no problem, as long as it hasn't seen any moisture I would hesitate to use it.

I'd say if it smells and tastes fine, give er.
Though I would proceed with caution and see how I react to just one shake after like 24 hours.
Could be in for some rough indigestion if it's foul.

As long as the moisture content is still low, you shouldn't have a problem. Expire dates are self imposed by the company because of legislation from the government. In no way does it actually mean it's bad then, it's just what is mandated to be put on.

Like before you never saw expire dates on any jar products, because once they are pasteurized in the jars all bacteria is dead, but the government imposed legislation stating that there had to be an expire date for customers, I don't know the exact length of time they are allowed, but let's say 3 years. So even though a product, like hot sauce is good pretty much forever, the company producing it HAS to put an expire date on it.

It would be the same with protien powder. I would bet that the water activity of the powder is way below .82 Aw to stop bacterial growth and product degradation, but if you opened the lid numerous times on a humid day, well that could change. But an expire date of dec 2016, I would not be worried in the least.

Like I said we the companies produce our own expire dates, we produce data (yeah, lol) to show it won't go bad within the time frame and it is approved by the inspector. It could last 10 times as long. Also be aware that expire dates could also be put on for a certain length of time so the consumer disposes of the product and buys new product, even though the old product is more than safe.

Btw, I have to do all this expire date, labelling shit at work on meat products, but it still is pretty much the same rules for dry goods, like protien powder.
