Edmonton city police officer found guilty of trafficking steroids
An Edmonton police officer accused of trafficking anabolic steroids between 2007 and 2013 has been found guilty on two counts.

An Edmonton police officer accused of trafficking anabolic steroids between 2007 and 2013 has been found guilty on two charges.

A former member of the Edmonton drug and gang enforcement unit, Det. Greg Lewis, faced three charges of trafficking in a controlled substance after he was arrested in March 2016 following a two-year investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT).

On Tuesday, Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Scott Brooker found Lewis guilty of two charges of trafficking in a controlled substance, but not guilty on a third because of unreliable witness testimony.

The 36-year-old was one of two officers charged as a result of the police watchdog’s investigation into events nearly a decade old.

Darren French, 51, pleaded guilty to two counts of trafficking in a controlled substance in June 2016. The then-constable was ordered to pay a $1,500 fine and given 18-months probation and 240 hours of community service.

Six officers were identified in the ASIRT investigation as having bought and used steroids in violation of the force’s code of conduct, but investigators believed at least 30 officers used steroids.

When ASIRT announced Lewis and French had been arrested and charged, police Chief Rod Knecht said it was an isolated incident, but one that was damaging to the image of the Edmonton Police Service (EPS).

The investigation found no evidence to suggest the steroid trafficking iwas a commercial operation, nor was it “a systemic or pervasive problem” throughout the police force.

The charges, however, prompted EPS to create an internal policy that prohibits officers from using or possessing steroids.

    Trial details use of steroids

Rumours had been swirling for some time before Lewis and French came to the attention of investigators that there were EPS members using anabolic steroids.

But it took a tip from a private citizen to get the ASIRT investigation rolling in April 2013.

While there are legitimate medical reasons to use steroids and their possession is not a criminal offence, access to steroids is heavily restricted and regulated. Illegal trafficking of anabolic steroids is a criminal offence.

During the Lewis trial, police officers gave various reasons for using steroids.

Const. Craig Mathewson, who testified he bought two anabolic steroids from Lewis in 2009, said he was recovering from a leg injury and feared he might fail a mandatory fitness test that would have seen him removed from the drug and gang unit. He bought Dianabol and Stanozolol (better known as Winstrol).

Const. Kevin Yaremchuk, who placed one order for liquid steroids Testosterone Cypionate and Deca Durabolin in 2009 and another order six months later for both drugs, as well as human growth hormone, said he was a fitness fanatic and interested in gaining muscle.

He testified he bought Winstrol from Lewis in 2012 to help regain muscle mass after a snowboarding crash.

Const. Sean Parker testified he and a colleague, who was not named, placed orders for a variety of drugs including Test-E or Testosterone Enanthate, a liquid steroid, through Lewis sometime between 2009 and 2010.

Two other officers, Sgt. Steve Maertens-Poole and Sgt. Adam Toma, both said they bought Winstrol to help lose weight and another officer, Const. Binoy Prabhu testified he was given M1T because he wanted to improve his workout regime.

In handing down his verdict, Brooker found Prabhu to be an unreliable witness due to his poor recollection of events and conflicting elements of his testimony.

    False statements

Two officers, Yaremchuk and Toma, both later admitted making false statements to ASIRT investigators during the probe.

At a police disciplinary hearing in 2015, Yaremchuk pleaded guilty to two charges under the Police Act — discreditable conduct and deceit. He was demoted for two years, losing $30,000 in pay.

Toma, who pleaded guilty to the same charges, was demoted for two years to constable, a monetary penalty of more than $20,700.

Toma’s dishonesty about steroid trafficking also led to a mistrial in a cocaine case in which he was a key witness.

A sentencing date for Lewis will be set Feb. 23, but that might not be the end of the case.

His lawyer, Dino Bottos, earlier in the trial filed a motion for a stay of proceedings due to the length of time the matter has been before the courts.

Bottos had yet to receive all the transcripts from the proceedings and said he would need to review them to determine if he continues with what is known as a Jordan application.

    KNOW YOUR STEROIDS
Some of the steroids several police officers turned to:

Winstrol (Winny) — One of the most widely used steroids that, when stacked with others, can reduce body fat and preserve lean muscle tissue. Probably the most famous use of Winny was by Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson, who tested positive for the drug after winning gold at the 1988 Summer Olympics.

Methyl-1-testosterone (M1T) — Marketed in the U.S. as a dietary supplement in the early 2000s, it is considered a pro-hormone or a precursor. Once ingested, the body metabolizes it into testosterone and it is used to bulk up. It’s highly toxic and can cause serious liver damage. The U.S. banned it in 2005, and it has always been illegal in Canada.

Testosterone Enanthate (Test-E) — Used to treat people with low testosterone. Unlike the previous two steroids, this isn’t for bulking up or cutting. It’s more of a multipurpose steroid that promotes and protects lean tissue and greater muscular metabolism.

Testosterone Cypionate (Cyp) — Similar to Test-E in its effectiveness, the two are often used interchangeably.

Deca Durabolin (Deca) — The brand name of Nandrolone Decanoate, considered by many one of the mildest steroids. Used by professional athletes such as Major League Baseball mega stars Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens, it maintains lean muscle mass.

Dianabol (DBol) — Used to bulk up quickly. According to online forums, patients can pack on nine kilograms in only a few weeks. With bulk comes strength. It was administered to the U.S. weightlifting team for the 1960 Rome Olympic Games.

I wonder how much it cost the tax payers to have a team of investigators spend two years sniffing out these "Criminals".... good thing they didn't spend the same amount of energy doing menial tasks like sourcing Fentynl or Heroin dealers that are killing people.... makes total sense to me

so a cop introduces and sells some anabolics to officers within his unit.....they took 2 years to investigate to slap him with trafficking.
When all he did was pass on the good stuff to his 'bros'..... I srsly SMH at this.

Note to police: do NOT distribute AAS amongst your bretheren for you will get pinched for trafficking

I feel like they always try to make a public example of cops when this happens. I mean how many cops out there are juicing? I live in a small city in Ontario, and of the five cops I know, three of them are currently, or have used gear in the past. Not saying it’s right... but they all do it.

Isn't that something we should all be mindful of? If you're getting gear for yourself, you're never going to catch any legal trouble in this country. If you're getting it for you and your bros? You're walking the line to get-fucked territory. I'll give a friend an email address. I won't give him a bag of drugs.

They went back to 2009 to get some of the individuals.
That really sucks, it probably never really crossed their mind what they did 8 to 9 years ago would come back and haunt them.
