Considering doing my first strongman comp at novice lw (under 90kg). Only event that has me worried is a 170 lbs log for reps as Iv never touched a log before, would neutral grip seated press translate at all? I can rep out 130 on that obviously with no legs to help. Just doing this for fun/something to train for but obviously don't see the point if I can't even complete each event. Got two months to prep.

Sandbag toss 15-15-20-25-30
Log for reps 170
Axle deadlift 365
Yoke/farmers 450/180
Stone over bar 200

Is the log press standing and you have to clean it from the ground first? If so then I suggest you do barbell from the ground, clean it and then press it for reps. I competed in strongman in my 20s and that is how we had to train for it until we got a log.

Cool man, hope it's a blast.
Find out the specific lifts and train that way. I'm sure there is a website available for you to get info from. Did you have to join a federation to compete? Maybe start looking there. I know when I did my first comp I knew little about the poses required bit there was an associated website that got me on my way. Good luck with it. Keep us posted on how it all goes.

Guna try a few of the lifts(or modified best as I can with the equipment available to me) this week to get a better idea of where I stand guna load up 450 in the rack tomorow and just see how that even feels on my back.

Ya I was thinking that, I got a pile of logs sittin at my woodlot right now that I logged in the fall might try to dig one out and make something happen. Long way to go though, my overheads severely lacking, I tried neutral grip pressing dumbbells today and only got 4 reps out of the 60's, apparently seated press does not translate over lol. Might be waiting till the next one and actually working on these lifts in the meantime. Im right at the line for under 90kg I'm weighing in at 200 every morning so If I'm guna let that powerbelly go for the next one I'm going to have to up to heavyweight.

It's hard to be certain as to the spacing of the neutral grip on the log press, but perhaps something like a trap bar would allow you to practice presses where the hand holds are fixed in distance and thus you can recruit more triceps.

The dumbbells seemed like a decent simulation, I can't imagine the log grips are much wider than shoulder width so I was just getting the "thumb side" of the dumbell resting on my front delt and pressing from there. Definitely feels different having the weight out in front of you like that. Once some of this snow melts I'll make a log out at my property And start practicing with that.

I have played around with strongman equipment. I went to a killer strongman/powerlifting gym for some time.

Try to find a gym with a log or buy one. If not try and simulate the best you can. Don’t stress if you can’t just go do the best you can and have fun. Strongman training is great fun and found them to be really great guys and girls and just a great community.
The often did events along side big tasty bbq’s at my gym.

I'm going for it, just registered! Iv made huge progress the last month or so, deadlift jumped 40 pounds, repping 170 on pushpress now and I still have a month to make even more progress. Plus a guy I know has all the implements they'll be using and offered to get a few sessions in with me this next month.

never had the chance to try a log lift.. cost wise as those things are expensive I would assume a swiss bar might be a close option to give you a sim feel? and more cost effective until you wanna commit to going full strong man addict

5/5 would highly recommend! Tons of fun, great guys, great spirit of competition and a great goal to work towards for both prep/training and further goals down the road if you don't place or perform as well as you feel you should have/could have!

I DO advise getting a coach though, if they are in your area.
It can be a GREAT help for preventing injuries and getting tips for certain lifts, pivot points, "tricks of the trade" as it were.

=)

So looks like I'm the only guy registered for lightweight so Im going to work with a guy today who has access to the proper equipment to see where I'm at and if I can realistically make the jump to heavyweight in a months time.

235 log for reps instead of 170
405 deadlift for reps instead of 365
220 stone over bar for reps instead of 200
500/200 yoke/farmers carry instead of 450/180

Id like to make the jump cause I'm not a fan of getting a trophy by default, I'd rather get my ass kicked at heavyweight than have no competition at lightweight but its definitely a jump for me for everything except deadlift and I don't want to dnf any events so depending how today goes I'll either "compete" alone just to get the first comp out of the way or jump up to heavyweight if I can.
